HISTORY

St Andrew's Anglican Church

St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Longwood, part of the Wangaratta Diocese since the 1930s, boasts a rich history. In 1853, a dispute arose over the location of the church, leading to its construction near the cemetery in Old Longwood. The church, with seating for 200, opened in 1887, incorporating materials from a demolished hotel.

Rev. Fitzgerald later redirected the church’s future by establishing a fund to build a church in New Longwood. As the railway line opened and the population shifted, services began alternating between Old and New Longwood, with St. Andrew’s Anglican Church officially opening in New Longwood in 1901.

Transportation to services was once horseback or buggy, with ministers often conducting ceremonies in multiple towns on the same day. The church is adorned with memorials, including stained glass windows donated by local families and a plaque honoring Rev. Robertson, who tragically died in a rectory fire.

Despite changes, St. Andrew’s has remained a pillar of the community. It served as an independent parish until Rev. Robertson’s death, after which it joined the Parish of Nagambie and later the Euroa Parish. A hall was built in the 1960s for various activities, and St. Andrew’s Day is celebrated annually. The church continues to thrive, with dedicated volunteers ensuring its upkeep and honoring the traditions of its pioneers.
