Anglican Parish of Euroa

St Dunstans Violet Town

HISTORY

St Dunstans Anglican Church

The Anglican Church of Saint Dunstan in High Street Violet Town was built in 1879. Since then, there have been regular services. The parish priest lives in Euroa but travels to Violet Town and Longwood, which has been happening for a long time. Violet Town used to be its own parish, which included Dookie and Nalinga churches.

St Dunstan’s Church has held many baptisms, weddings, and funerals over the years, making it an important part of Violet Town’s history. There’s a register in the church that lists all these important occasions. The church building is one of the few old buildings in Violet Town, reminding us of our heritage. Its windows were made by famous stained glass manufacturers, Ferguson and Urie.

Next to the church is St Dunstan’s Parish Hall, built in 1904 with an added supper room. It has hosted various events over the years, including being a theater in the 1950s. Now, it’s used for monthly movie screenings by the local film society. The Rectory, built in 1910, was sold in 2006 and renovated by new owners while keeping some of its original features.

The church grounds are well looked after and include a memorial garden and wall. Some trees are dedicated to the Ladies Guild, who served both the church and the community well. Others are dedicated to remember community members and important events.

St Dunstan’s Church needs restoration, and some work has been done inside already. Fundraising is ongoing for further restoration. There’s also a time capsule buried near the foundation stone, but the date to open it hasn’t been decided yet.

The Church of Saint Dunstan is part of the Parish of Euroa in the Diocese of Wangaratta. You can contact The Rectory in Euroa at 03 5704 0330.
